THE DOMESTIC LABOUR LAW

Here are the key highlights of the Domestic Labour Law.

Contract – Workers must have a written employment contract and a copy in a language they understand.

Probation Period – A probation period of up to six months is allowed and counts toward total service time.

Wages – Salaries must be paid electronically on time, with overtime pay for extra hours worked.

Working Hours – The maximum working hours are 8 per day (48 per week), with reduced hours during Ramadan.

Rest & Breaks – Workers are entitled to daily rest breaks and at least one full rest day per week.

Sick Leave & Health Insurance – Workers receive up to 90 days of sick leave, with employer-provided health insurance varying by emirate.

Annual Leave & Special Leaves – Workers are entitled to 30 days of paid annual leave, maternity leave, and special leave for family events.

Termination of Employment & Changing Jobs – Workers may resign with 30-90 days’ notice and transfer to another employer under specific conditions.

End of Service Benefits – Workers receive gratuity pay based on years of service, capped at two years’ wages.

Recruitment Fees – Employers must cover recruitment costs, and workers cannot be charged for employment fees.


Your Identification Documents – Workers have the right to keep their passport and ID, and employers cannot confiscate them.
